Will Remote Work Be Forever?

Is remote work here to stay? We were chatting over the dining room table yesterday evening, in particularly good company, and the topic of the industries we work in arose.

It would be foolhardy to avoid the subject of all the changes in the world over the last six months.

The recent 7,000 permanent jobs announced by Amazon for the UK and the continuous growth in the online sector (one of us works in digital marketing and just their company alone has seen a two-fold increase in staff from one to two thousand) is in some way taking the sting out of the vast numbers of jobs being lost in the retail sector amongst others.

The conversation moved on to how our high streets and our offices will look. It seems that both of these go hand in glove. The more we work from home or away from the office the more people will work from coffee shops on high streets… high streets may become points of connectivity where you can work, socialise safely, collect your shopping or get it delivered to a store to try on… it will be fascinating to watch this unfold.

The connectivity we experience with our customers now via zoom is fantastic. We see and speak to them more than we ever have. This said, there is something instinctual and primal about *real* connection – this video from Simon Sinek entitled “Will Work Be Remote Forever” is really thought provoking:
