What Is Your Packaging Actually Worth?

For some of the brands we look after, the honest answer is: quite a lot.

Their customers resell the packaging to each other. Not the product; the box it arrived in. It has a value on the secondary market, because to the right people, it isn’t packaging any more. It’s a token of belonging to something they care about.

It sounds like theory until you see it

There are online groups that exist purely to share parcels arriving. Members post their unboxings, compare inserts and swap the details they spotted. Some of these communities even run their own Secret Santa, buying each other gifts from the brand they all love.

That’s not a customer base. That’s a tribe.

What a tribe is worth in LTV terms

What a tribe is worth: retention, repeat purchase and referral

Here’s where it gets interesting for the numbers.

Tribes don’t churn. Leaving the brand means leaving the group, and that’s a much bigger decision than switching suppliers.

Tribes don’t wait for discounts. They buy to stay part of it, because new releases are what the group talks about.

Tribes recruit for free. Belonging is contagious. Every shared unboxing is an advert you didn’t pay for, seen by exactly the kind of person most likely to buy.

We see it in the gift notes on orders coming through: “Saw this and thought of you.” “You’re going to love this brand.” My team see them all the time, and they’re one of the clearest signs a brand has become a movement. Retention, referral and acquisition, all coming out of the same place: how the order shows up.

The doorstep is where it’s protected, or lost

One of the community brands we work with has a single dominant peak each year. Before we redesigned their order fulfilment, that peak dictated the founder’s entire calendar. We rebuilt it around protecting the brand rather than just moving boxes. Errors dropped, the founder got their time back, and the feeling their customers pay for was protected right at its most fragile point: delivery.

The founder described coming out of it freer, and called it a genuinely life-changing experience. That’s the whole idea in one story. Protect the experience at the doorstep and you protect the lifetime value, the community and the founder’s sanity, all at once.

Not every brand will have a resale market for its boxes

And that’s fine. The principle still holds at any scale. If your customers would notice, keep or share what arrives, you’re already building towards belonging. If they’d bin it without a second glance, that’s worth knowing too.
